Winchester Artist Presents “A New Perspective on The Civil War"

December 15, 2011, Winchester, MA   --  Local artist John M. Williams will display his original collage interpretations of the Civil War in an exhibit at the Winchester Public Library, January 4-31, 2012.  There will be an opening reception on Thursday, January 5 from 7-8:30 pm at the library.

John specializes in portrait collages of great historical figures with a special interest in the Civil War. He creates intriguing portraits by piecing together small pieces of cut paper to create a likeness of his subject, revealing the person’s character as well as their historical significance.  John also creates  interpretations of landmark events in Civil War history such as the Bleeding Kansas era, the firing on Fort Sumter, and Reconstruction.

John’s work has been shown in the Outsider Art Fair in New York City, the SOFA exhibit in Chicago, the Slotin Folk Fest in Atlanta, and in numerous local area exhibits, most recently a portrait show at the Belmont Gallery of Art:  See You, See Me.  He also exhibits regularly with the Asperger’s Association of New England’s art program:  Seeing with a Different Eye.

John is a member of ArcWorks, the art program of the Northeast ARC, the Concord Arts Association, and the Civil War Roundtable of Greater Boston.  He is a graduate of Winchester High School and UMASS Lowell.  For more information, see John’s website:  johnmwilliamsfineart.com.

John Williams Sells Collage to Outsider Art Collector

November 16, 2010, WINCHESTER, Mass.  –  John M. Williams, a Winchester artist who specializes in fine art collage, has sold a collage entitled John Brown, The Gathering Storm to a major collector of folk and outsider art.

Paul Yandura, a principal in Scott+Yandura, a progressive political consulting firm in Washington, D.C., purchased the piece for his personal collection.  Paul was so intrigued by John’s work, he wrote a feature article about John in Folk Art Messenger, a magazine published by the Folk Art Society of America that features articles about self-taught artists.

The 3-page article showcases seven of John's collages, and includes insights into John's artistic technique and inspiration. John Brown -- The Gathering Storm was featured on the cover of the magazine.

John Williams specializes in collage portraits of great historical figures and events with a special interest in Civil War art. John uses hundreds of small pieces of paper cut from magazines to create a likeness of his subject that reveals the person’s character as well as his historical significance.  As an artist with Asperger’s Syndrome, a type of autism, John expresses himself through his art. He was recently featured in a book about artists with autism entitled Drawing Autism by Jill Mullin.

John is a member of ArcWorks, the Folk Art Society of America, the Concord Art Association and the Civil War Roundtable of Greater Boston. Local Artist Featured in New Book about Autistic Artists

May 5, 2010, WINCHESTER, Mass. -- John M. Williams, a Winchester artist who specializes in fine art collage, has been featured in a new book about artists with autism entitled Drawing Autism. The new book celebrates the artistry and self-expression foundin the drawings, paintings and collages created by individuals diagnosed with autism.

Drawing Autism is written by Jill Mullin, abehavior analyst and educator,with an intro by Temple Grandin, a world-renowned autistic adult. Published in December 2009 by Mark Batty Publishers in New York City, the book features an array of work from autistic artists. Their creations, coupled with artist interviews, comprise a fascinating and compelling book that illustrates how autism manifests differently in every diagnosis.

Drawing Autism features three of John’s collages – Lincoln, General Sherman and Pharaoh. John specializes in portrait collages of great historical figures with a special interest in Civil War art. He creates intriguing collages by piecing together small cut pieces of paper to create a likeness of his subject that reveals the person’s character as well as their historical significance.

John’s work was recently featured at a celebration of Lincoln’s 150th visit to Exeter, New Hampshire entitled In Exeter: A Sesquicentennial Celebration. His work has also been shown in multiple galleries and exhibits throughout New England including the Gallery at Southside in Danvers, Concord Art Association, Marblehead Festival of the Arts, Salem Arts Festival, Lynn Arts, and at the Asperger’s Association of New England annual exhibit entitled Seeing with a Different Eye.

John is a member artist of ArcWorks, a program that showcases the work of artists with disabilities through the Northeast Arc. He is also a member of the Concord Art Association and the Civil War Roundtable of Greater Boston.
